Problematic Light Switches

Light switches separate a homeowner from total darkness and light during night time. But like any other often-used fixture in the house, light switches are also subject to wear and tear, and other possible issues.

But unlike a burned out light bulb that can be changed by any homeowner, light switches are not something that any avid self-troubleshooter can simply do. A malfunctioning light bulb can be an electrical shock hazard.

One of the most common light switch issue is a bussing light switch. The website DIY Network explains buzzing outlets can be considered normal for dimmer switches, but the case is not the same for the ordinary switch.

"If you are using an ordinary toggle switch, though, a buzzing sound or the heating up and glowing of the switch is a sign that there is a loose wire somewhere or that your breaker is overloaded. In this case, you will need the help of an experienced electrician. If you continue to ignore these signs, the switch can overheat and become a fire hazard." Another light switch issue is sparking. While it is possible to see a tiny bit of spark inside a switch from time to time, if the spark reaches the outside of the switch or causes a smoke or a burning odor then this signifies trouble. Have an electrician check the switch and replace as needed.

Home improvement website The Spruce meanwhile shared various issues that may hound home light switches. One of those discussed in their web article is temperamental lights. "You've likely had this experience: you flip a light switch on and it takes a moment for the light to go on. This usually indicates that the metal parts inside the switch are wearing out and that its contacts are failing to make the connections needed to complete the electrical path and allow the light to illuminate." Another common light switch problem is a non-working light switch. This usually indicates that there may have been a fuse that had been set off in the fuse box as a precautionary measure. Before calling in the electrician, check out the breaker box first and inspect if there was a flipped breaker. If there was indeed a breaker that went off, reset it and try if the switch will work again. If not, then have an electrician check the mechanism of your light switch.

When facing issues with regard to light switches, always keep your personal safety in mind. If unsure of what to do, leave the switch alone, put a label next to it so that no one will turn it on or touch it. Seek a licensed electrician's help and have it inspected and repaired.
